The Spider-Man and Skeleton Crew director has reportedly been tapped to launch a new Star Wars trilogy — possibly Episode X. Here's what we actually know (and what's still unconfirmed).
The Hollywood Reporter's Borys Kit reports that Jon Watts has been tapped to direct the first installment of a new Star Wars trilogy for Lucasfilm.
Veteran writer-producer Simon Kinberg is writing the trilogy, having worked on a mystery trilogy since late 2024, according to THR. Kinberg previously co-created Star Wars Rebels and produced several X-Men films.
The project is intended as the next phase of a potential new Skywalker Saga, continuing the story after 2019's The Rise of Skywalker, Kit reported. Some insiders expect it to be called Episode X — but that is reported, not confirmed.
THR reports that Daisy Ridley is expected to appear in some capacity as Rey Skywalker, though exactly how is unclear. The smaller outlet Knight Edge Media claims she may serve more as a mentor figure — unconfirmed.
Watts co-created the Disney+ series Star Wars: Skeleton Crew and directed the MCU's Spider-Man Home trilogy: Homecoming, Far From Home, and No Way Home.
No. THR notes the project has not been formally greenlit by Disney — so this is reported development, not an announced film. Lucasfilm had no comment, according to Star Wars News Net.
Gizmodo notes the film is reportedly the furthest along of the many Star Wars movies in development. Still, Disney has shelved plenty of announced Star Wars projects before.
Unconfirmed: Knight Edge Media claims director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's previously announced New Jedi Order film may have been scrapped and reworked into this story. Treat this as rumor until officially confirmed.
Knight Edge Media reports unknown actors are being sought for male and female leads — also unconfirmed. No cast has been officially announced.
The only Star Wars film officially on the schedule is Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, hitting theaters on May 28, 2027.
Since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019, a long line of Star Wars film projects never made it to production. The jury's out, as Gizmodo put it.
There is no release date yet — a green light from Disney will likely need to come first. Stay tuned for updates.
