Jaguar Type 01 Electric GT Revealed in New York: 450-Mile Range, Tri-Motor Power, a Brand Reborn

Jaguar has unveiled the production Jaguar Type 01 electric GT in New York, the first production car of the British brand’s reinvention and the first Jaguar built on its dedicated Jaguar Electric Architecture (JEA) platform. Revealed on Tuesday evening, October 6, at 8 p.m. ET, the four-door luxury GT pairs a huge 118kWh usable battery with a claimed WLTP range of up to 450 miles — among the longest claimed ranges of any electric car on sale today, and a statement of intent from a brand starting over.

Jaguar says the Type 01 spearheads the brand’s next generation of vehicles and is designed, developed and built in the UK. Orders are expected to open in early 2027, with first customer deliveries anticipated in the second half of the year, according to Fleet News. The reveal follows Jaguar ending sales of its previous generation of cars in the UK in November 2024 — so a great deal is riding on this car, as one motoring outlet put it.

Jaguar Type 01 Electric GT: Range and Charging

For a car aimed at long-distance luxury touring, range is the headline. Jaguar claims the Type 01’s 118kWh usable battery will deliver up to 450 miles on the WLTP cycle, with up to 320 miles of sustained high-speed highway range — the kind of long-distance capability corporate and high-mileage drivers demand. The company had previously targeted around 430 miles on the EPA cycle, according to moto-match.com.

The car rides on an 850-volt electrical architecture supporting 350kW DC fast charging. Jaguar says up to 200 miles of range can be added in as little as 13 minutes, with a 10–80% charge taking around 22 minutes. The battery has split-charging capability to make better use of 400-volt public chargers, allowing up to 250kW in those conditions. For home and workplace charging, the onboard AC charger handles up to 22kW, and the car has twin charging ports — one on each side — so it can be plugged in regardless of how it is parked.

Tri-Motor Powertrain: More Than 1,000 HP

Power comes from a tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup: one 260kW motor at the front and two 310kW motors at the rear. Jaguar quotes more than 1,000 horsepower (1,000 PS / 986 hp) — with some outlets reporting up to 1,030 hp — and around 1,365Nm of torque, making it Jaguar’s most powerful road car ever. The claimed 0–100km/h time is 3.2 seconds, with 100–180km/h taking another 4.0 seconds.

The rear motors can disengage when not needed to improve efficiency. The car has 50:50 weight distribution, rear-biased all-wheel drive, all-wheel steering — giving the huge four-door a turning circle of just 11.5m — double-wishbone front and integral-link rear suspension with air suspension and adaptive dampers. Five drive modes are offered: Jaguar, Dynamic, Efficient, Ice & Snow, plus a customisable Curated mode.

Monumental Design, No Rear Window

At 5,235mm long and just 1,403mm tall, the Type 01 is long, wide and low — lower than two of its own 23-inch wheels stacked on top of each other. There is no rear window: a solid tailgate gives the car a monolithic look, with a camera-based rear-view display replacing the mirror. Active aerodynamics, including a three-stage deployable spoiler, deliver a drag coefficient of 0.23 — the lowest of any Jaguar.

Inside, a central spine runs the length of the cabin, dividing it into four individual seats. The driver faces a 24-inch OLED display, with a 7-inch touchscreen for climate and audio functions. Jaguar also fits a 38-speaker Meridian sound system with a full-width panoramic soundbar, heated and cooled front and rear seats, massaging front seats and a switchable panoramic glass roof. Boot space is more than 450 litres, rising to 1,000 litres with the rear seats folded.

Why This Reveal Matters

The Type 01 is not just another model launch — it is the test of whether Jaguar’s controversial reinvention can work. The car follows the polarizing Type 00 design concept Jaguar showed at Miami Art Week in 2024, which previewed the “Exuberant Modernism” design philosophy now applied to the production car. Fittingly, history repeated itself: images of the finished Type 01 circulated online on October 5, less than 24 hours before the reveal — just as Type 00 images leaked the day before that concept’s debut.

Jaguar is moving decisively upmarket. With pricing reportedly starting from around £120,000 in the UK and approximately AUD $300,000 in Australia, the brand is positioning itself as a rival to Bentley rather than BMW. The JEA platform will underpin more models, including a large SUV the brand needs to survive.

The reveal also comes at a moment of mixed fortunes for luxury EV rivals. Lucid recently cut production guidance after missing third-quarter delivery expectations (read our coverage), while Rivian is dealing with yet another recall (read our coverage) — a reminder that turning bold EV promises into production cars is the industry’s hardest job.
