Tesla Recalls 131,726 Model 3 Premium Sedans in Europe Over Airbag Safety Flaw

Tesla Model 3 sedan — the Tesla Model 3 Premium recall covers 131,726 cars built at Giga Shanghai

Tesla is recalling 131,726 Model 3 Premium sedans across Europe, the Middle East and South Korea after regulators found the cars’ far-side airbag may not protect occupants properly in a side-impact crash. The Tesla Model 3 Premium recall, flagged in the European Union’s Safety Gate alert system on October 16, 2026, covers left-hand-drive cars built at Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory between June 30, 2024 and May 8, 2026.

The fix is a free over-the-air software update, so owners will not need to visit a service centre. Tesla’s own service bulletin, SB-26-00-006, says the update adjusts side-impact performance, and the company says owners can keep driving their cars in the meantime.

What Failed: The Far-Side Airbag

The problem centres on the far-side airbag — the front-centre airbag mounted between the driver and front passenger, designed to stop occupants sliding across the car toward the struck side in a side collision. Under UN Regulation No. 135, the pole side-impact test drives a pole into the driver’s door at 32 km/h (about 20 mph) with a crash-test dummy in the driver’s seat, and the lateral force on the dummy’s shoulder must not exceed 3.0 kilonewtons.

According to the EU Safety Gate alert, notified by Germany and published on October 16, the recalled Model 3 Premium cars may exceed that limit because of the airbag’s deployment calibration. The alert warns the car “may provide insufficient protection in the event of a side impact,” increasing the risk of injury to occupants, and rates the risk as serious.

Tesla’s service bulletin puts it in similar terms: “On certain vehicles built between June 30, 2024 and May 8, 2026, the pole side impact performance under UN Regulation No. 135 may not meet the applicable regulatory limit and peak lateral shoulder force may exceed 3.0 kN.”

Neither the Safety Gate alert nor the French motoring outlet Auto Plus, which first reported the recall on October 21, reports any related crashes or injuries.

Which Cars Are Affected

The recall covers 131,726 left-hand-drive Model 3 Premium sedans built at Giga Shanghai for the European Union, the Middle East and South Korea. The affected cars were manufactured between June 30, 2024 and May 8, 2026, and the recall measure has been in force since September 30, 2026.

Germany’s motor transport authority, the Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA), is monitoring the recall programme under reference number 16992R. Tesla’s internal code for the campaign is SB-26-00-006, listed in the Safety Gate system as SR/02850/26.

Owners do not need to do anything yet: the remedy arrives as a software update delivered over the air, the same way Tesla delivers most of its recall fixes. Tesla’s bulletin notes that recall work performed by uncertified technicians could void warranty provisions, but a software update installed by the owner in the normal course of ownership is the intended remedy.

Why This Recall Matters

The far-side airbag is a relatively recent safety feature, added to meet tougher side-impact rules that recognise a grim reality of real-world crashes: in a pole or narrow-object side impact, the force is concentrated on a small area of the door, and occupants can be thrown across the cabin toward the impact. The centre airbag is designed to cushion that sideways movement.

A calibration miss matters because side impacts leave little crumple zone between the occupant and the intruding object. Regulators set the 3.0 kN shoulder-force limit precisely because forces above it sharply raise the risk of chest and shoulder injuries.

The recall is also a reminder of how much of modern vehicle safety now lives in software. Where an older recall might have meant replacing a physical part, this one is fixed by changing how and when the airbag deploys — a software calibration change pushed to the car remotely.

Tesla’s Recall Record in 2026

Tesla is no stranger to large recalls, though most in recent years have been software fixes delivered over the air. In the United States, Tesla recalled 2,791 vehicles in October over a front suspension lateral link that may not have been secured properly during manufacturing — one of the rarer recent cases requiring a physical repair.

In Europe, Tesla has faced a series of KBA-monitored campaigns, including a tyre-pressure monitoring recall covering 387,642 Model Y and Model 3 vehicles and a steering-related recall of 552,780 cars. The Model 3 Premium airbag recall is smaller than those, but its “serious risk” rating from Safety Gate puts it in the more closely watched category.

The recall comes as Tesla’s European sales have faced pressure from intensifying competition and a cooling EV market. Tesla’s US business has also had a mixed year: the company reported a sharp profit decline in its Q3 2026 earnings, though deliveries beat expectations.

What Owners Should Do

Owners of affected Model 3 Premium cars should install the software update when Tesla pushes it to their vehicle, and can check applicability through Tesla’s VIN and bulletin tracker or by contacting an authorised workshop. The company says owners can keep driving while waiting for the update, and no service visit is required.

European owners can also check the EU Safety Gate system or their national vehicle authority for the recall notice, listed under reference SR/02850/26.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Tesla cars are recalled in the Model 3 Premium airbag recall? 131,726 left-hand-drive Model 3 Premium sedans built at Giga Shanghai between June 30, 2024 and May 8, 2026, sold in the European Union, the Middle East and South Korea.

What is wrong with the far-side airbag? The airbag’s deployment calibration may allow shoulder forces to exceed the 3.0 kN limit in the UN R135 pole side-impact test, meaning the car may provide insufficient protection in a side impact.

Do owners need to visit a Tesla service centre? No. The fix is a free over-the-air software update (Tesla bulletin SB-26-00-006). Owners can keep driving until the update is installed.

Have there been any crashes or injuries linked to this defect? Neither the EU Safety Gate alert nor Auto Plus reports any related crashes or injuries.
