Lena Dunham’s Girls Reboot: HBO Orders Five-Episode Revival for 2027

The Girls reboot is officially happening. HBO has ordered five new episodes of Lena Dunham’s generation-defining comedy, reuniting Dunham with Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet and Andrew Rannells for a limited revival a decade after the show’s finale, the network announced on Tuesday, October 13, 2026.

Production on the new chapters begins in 2027, ten years after Girls wrapped its six-season run. The announcement traveled fast through the pop-culture press: People’s October 15, 2026 “PEOPLE in 10” weekly roundup noted that Dunham had “shared plans to reboot the HBO series Girls nearly a decade after its finale,” placing the news alongside the week’s biggest celebrity stories.

HBO Orders a Five-Episode Girls Reboot for 2027

The order is for a limited run of five episodes — not a full ongoing season — with Dunham back as creator, star and executive producer. It arrives as one of the first major production announcements at HBO since its parent company, Warner Bros. Discovery, was taken over by Skydance-owned Paramount, according to the Associated Press.

HBO broke the news with a video announcement in which Dunham video-calls Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells to pop the question, USA Today reports. “Is it something that you would want to do again? Are you free next summer?” Dunham asks — and every one of them says yes. The clip ends with Dunham joking, “Can we still call it ‘Girls’? Because we’re, like, old as –” before the video cuts out. No footage from the new episodes has been released; the video is a cast announcement, not a trailer.

Girls Reboot Cast: Who’s Returning (and Who’s Sitting Out)

Nearly the entire core ensemble is back. Dunham returns as aspiring-writer Hannah Horvath, with Allison Williams as Marnie Michaels, Jemima Kirke as Jessa Johansson, Zosia Mamet as Shoshanna Shapiro and Andrew Rannells as Elijah Krantz. Behind the camera, Judd Apatow returns as executive producer alongside Dunham and Ilene S. Landress and Michael P. Cohen of Dunham’s Good Thing Going banner — while Williams, Kirke, Mamet and Rannells all step up as co-executive producers, Consequence reports.

Two notable names are absent from the announcement. Adam Driver, who played Hannah’s volatile on-and-off boyfriend, was not named in HBO’s release, per the Associated Press. Original co-showrunner Jenni Konner is also not involved, according to Consequence. Context matters here: USA Today notes that Dunham’s memoir Famesick, released earlier in 2026, detailed her complicated working relationship with Driver, whom she alleged could be “short-tempered” and “verbally aggressive” on set. Whether Driver’s absence is a creative choice, a scheduling one, or simply unconfirmed for now has not been addressed by HBO or Dunham.

What Lena Dunham Said About the Girls Reboot

Dunham has long said she’d only revisit the show for the right story — and turning 40 appears to have provided it. “We always said we would only return to ‘Girls’ if there was a specific story we were burning to tell,” she said in a statement released with the announcement. She added that she had missed the characters but for a long time couldn’t picture them in the present day — until, around her fortieth birthday, they started talking to her in the shower.

Dunham continued that it’s rare to get the chance to return to something that changed your life “with the gift of hindsight and a whole new level of gratitude and understanding,” and that she loves “these girls (and boy), our friends at HBO, and all the people who have continued to discover the show” — plus, she joked, “the chance to wear yellow mesh.”

HBO’s head of comedy programming, Amy Gravitt, said in a statement that “we’re thrilled to have Lena turn her gaze from the tumult of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty.” Gravitt added that the world has changed enormously since viewers last saw Hannah, Marnie, Shoshanna, Jessa and Elijah — but fans old and new will be happy to see how they’ve grown, and relieved that they’re still recognizably the “Girls” from back when.

A Refresher: The Show That Defined a Generation (2012–2017)

Girls followed a group of friends stumbling through their twenties in New York City, and it was both a touchstone and a lightning rod: celebrated for its frank, funny depiction of millennial young women and endlessly debated for the same reasons. It ran for six seasons on HBO from 2012 to 2017, earned 19 Emmy nominations and won two, per the Associated Press. Dunham created the series and starred as lead character Hannah; Adam Driver and Christopher Abbott also starred.

Affection for the show has surged in the decade since the finale, especially among younger viewers who treat it as aspirational, endlessly quotable and meme-able — none more so than Hannah’s pilot-episode plea to her parents that she might be “the voice of my generation. Or at least a voice of a generation.” Dunham turned 40 in May 2026, and the revival will pointedly shift the show’s gaze from the mess of one’s twenties to the milestone of turning forty.

Dunham’s Road Back: Famesick, 40 and a Packed 2027

The Girls reboot caps a busy year for Dunham. Her revealing memoir Famesick, released earlier in 2026, chronicled her experience of grappling with fame at the height of the show. During the book’s publicity tour, she told People she had never rewatched Girls since it aired — not from dislike, but because when she has free time she’d rather watch other people’s work — calling the show’s rediscovery by a new generation “a great gift.”

And Girls isn’t her only 2027 project: Consequence reports that Dunham is also collaborating with Carly Rae Jepsen on a musical adaptation of 10 Things I Hate About You headed for Broadway. Dunham isn’t the only creator with a stacked 2027 either — check out our coverage of Greta Gerwig’s Narnia trailer for another major 2027 release taking shape.

Girls Reboot Release Date: What Happens Next

Here’s what remains unconfirmed: HBO has not announced a premiere date or said when the episodes will air or stream, and no plot details have been revealed. Story specifics are being kept under wraps for now. What is confirmed is the format — five episodes, a defined limited run — and the 2027 production start, a full decade after the April 2017 finale.

For prestige-TV fans counting down to other big returns, The Diplomat Season 4 has already landed on Netflix — eight new episodes of the Keri Russell political thriller dropped October 15, 2026.
